Exploring the Wonders of Turkey: An Unforgettable Educational Journey

by Kathy Hirst

Like many travelers, I had heard countless stories about Turkey from people who had visited briefly on cruise stops—most spending only half a day in Istanbul. They were always amazed by the city’s allure and said they wished they could explore more of Turkey someday. I felt truly fortunate to be selected for an in-depth educational experience to discover this captivating destination.

Adventures In Instanbul

At first, our trip seemed uncertain when the war in Iran began, but our partners at Vanguard Travel reassured us that Turkey was safe to visit and unaffected by the conflict. With their guidance and the hospitality of the Peninsula Hotel, our journey began smoothly in Istanbul.

Our expert local guide led us through the Old City, where we admired the stunning Blue Mosque and the magnificent Basilica of Saint Sophia. One of my favorite stops was the ancient underground cistern—known locally as the Sunken Palace—built in the sixth century. We also visited the splendid Topkapi Palace with its serene gardens, even beautiful in early spring. We ended the day wandering through the Grand Bazaar, where many in our group enjoyed shopping for rugs, coffee, towels, and the famous Turkish delight.

Dolmabahçe Palace & Cappadocia

The next day’s highlight was the Dolmabahçe Palace, commissioned by a sultan inspired by Versailles in the mid-19th century. Again, the gardens amazed us, and we learned that tulips actually originated in Turkey—not the Netherlands as many believe.

That afternoon, we flew to Cappadocia, a destination I’ve recommended to clients for years but had never seen myself. Nothing could have prepared me for its breathtaking beauty. We spent two nights at the charming Tofini Cave House Hotel and experienced the magic of a hot air balloon ride over the valley—a memory I’ll cherish forever. We explored the Ozkonak underground city and visited the Dark and Buckle Churches, where ancient cave monasteries are adorned with exquisite biblical frescoes. A highlight was dining at a local home and connecting with the warmth of Turkish hospitality.

Izmir, Ephesus & Bodrum

From Cappadocia, we flew to Izmir and drove to Ephesus, one of the world’s most remarkable archaeological sites. I had first visited over 35 years ago, yet it still felt awe-inspiring to see the Temple of Hadrian, the Terrace Houses, and the Library of Celsus. Our guide brought history to life with every story.

Our final stop was Bodrum, a beautiful seaside city popular with European travelers. We explored the Mausoleum and the Castle of Saint Peter, as well as the fascinating Maritime Museum featuring ancient ships and relics dating back to pre-BC times.

A Journey's End

Returning to Istanbul for our flight home, I felt deeply grateful for the experience. Turkey is an extraordinary country filled with culture, history, and warmth. I look forward to helping more of my clients discover its wonders firsthand.
