My Journey to the End of the Earth: Antarctica

by Kathy Hirst

Antarctica had always been on my dream list of destinations. Over the years, I had helped clients plan their journeys to this remote continent, diving into extensive research along the way. When I finally embarked on the trip myself, I found it every bit as awe-inspiring as I had imagined.

This journey is no small feat—it takes at least two days to cross the Drake Passage from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina, to the Antarctic continent. But don’t let the distance discourage you; it is absolutely worth the effort.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Our adventure began in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was springtime, and we were greeted by vibrant jacaranda trees in full lavender bloom. We spent the evening enjoying an authentic Argentinian barbecue at a renowned restaurant, where the chefs prepared our selected cuts of meat right before our eyes.

Ushuaia, Argentina

The next morning, we flew to Ushuaia, often referred to as the “End of the World.” This lively city offered a delightful overnight stay with plenty of shops and fascinating history. We took a brief tour of the nearby national park, which only deepened our desire to return to explore the region further.

All Aboard

The following afternoon, we boarded our Quark Expeditions ship. I was pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness and comfort of our balcony cabin, complete with a well-appointed bathroom. My initial expectation of cramped, basic accommodations was quickly dispelled.

Our journey began with a briefing—and the news that we would be crossing the Drake Passage under extremely turbulent conditions, often referred to as the “Drake Shake.” While the two-day crossing was indeed bumpy, it felt like a rite of passage for such a legendary voyage.

When we finally arrived, we were rewarded with a breathtaking Antarctic sunset, chunks of ice glistening in the water, and our first sighting of towering glaciers.

Sights and Wonders

Over the next four days, we delved into this pristine wilderness. Mornings and afternoons were filled with excursions, both on foot and by zodiac. We explored penguin colonies, marveling at their charming antics, and gazed at the indigo-blue glow of icebergs—natural sculptures of unrivaled beauty. Along the way, we encountered incredible wildlife, including leopard seals, Weddell seals, humpback whales, orcas, fin whales, and an astonishing variety of birds. Among them, the wandering albatross became my personal favorite.

The ship’s lectures added immense value to the experience, covering topics such as marine biology, Antarctic history, and the incredible stories of early explorers. The onboard dining was another highlight, with hearty meals that fueled our daily adventures.

Crossing Drake's Passage (Again)

After four unforgettable days on the Antarctic Peninsula, we headed back across the Drake Passage. This time, we were lucky to experience the “Drake Lake”—calm, mirror-like waters that made for a smooth return journey to Ushuaia. Back in Buenos Aires, we enjoyed one final day exploring the city’s rich history and culture before flying home.

Final Thoughts

I cannot recommend Quark Expeditions enough for anyone considering this trip. Their modern ship offered excellent amenities, including a gym, sauna, and spa, along with an exceptional crew who enriched the journey with their knowledge and camaraderie. Optional activities like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and even camping on the continent were available for the more adventurous.

For me, the cozy warmth of my cabin was the perfect retreat after each day’s exploration. This journey was everything I had hoped for—wildlife, unspoiled landscapes, and a profound sense of awe at the beauty of our planet. If you’re seeking a life-changing experience, Antarctica awaits.

I would love to help you plan your Antarctic adventure!
